Getting a Musselburgh New Build House to bloom.
We transformed a bare new build plot into a vibrant family garden with multiple entertaining spaces, deep planted beds, and adaptable areas that grow with the family's changing needs.
The project at a glance
The brief: Transform a blank canvas new build garden into a multi-functional family space with entertaining areas, children's zones, and practical storage.
Timeline: 1 week (garden matured over 3 years)
Budget: Large (£15k-£35k)
The result: A beautiful, evolving garden that serves multiple family functions and adapts to changing needs over time.
When our clients moved into their new build home, they were faced with the typical housebuilder's leftover - a muddy, sparse, unnurtured space with no character but a ton of potential. They needed a multi-purpose family garden that could serve everyone's needs: adults wanting sophisticated entertaining spaces; beautiful deep beds full of year-round interest and colour; room for children to play; and practical areas for storage and food growing. They also wanted a space that could adapt as their family grew and changed over the years.
Our Approach
We designed this garden with flexibility and longevity in mind. Rather than creating fixed spaces that would quickly become outdated, we planned zones that could evolve with the family's needs. The key was creating a foundation that would support beautiful planting while providing distinct areas for different activities - from quiet morning coffee spots to large family gatherings.
What We Did
Created multiple entertaining zones including a breakfast spot positioned to catch morning sun and a larger deck area designed for evening entertainment and family gatherings.
Installed deep planted beds throughout the garden with a rich mixture of trees, shrubs, and perennials to provide year-round colour and interest.
Used established plants and trees to create instant privacy and interest.
Designed adaptable spaces that could be modified over time as the children grew and family needs changed.
Incorporated practical elements including barbecue areas, vegetable growing spaces, and storage for tools and equipment.
Improved soil quality selectively in planting areas and lawn zones to ensure healthy plant growth while controlling costs.
Reduced waste by reusing some of the existing site materials, saving them from landfill and saving the client money.
The Soil Challenge
The biggest challenge was working with the poor-quality soil typical of new build developments. Rather than attempting costly soil replacement across the entire garden, we took a targeted approach. We improved soil quality only in the areas that needed it most - the planting beds and lawn areas. This would ensure healthy plant growth while keeping costs reasonable for our clients.
Growing with the Family
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project has been watching it evolve over the past three years. The garden was specifically designed to be easily adapted as the family's needs changed. We've returned several times to make modifications - creating more space for the children as they've grown and adjusting areas to better serve the family's evolving lifestyle.
The mature plants our clients invested in have provided immediate impact and privacy from neighbouring properties, while the overall design has proven its flexibility by accommodating these changes seamlessly.
Keeping It Beautiful
As a busy working family, they wanted our support to keep the garden looking its absolute best. We have been providing support with:
Regular maintenance service with fortnightly mowing, weeding, and bed upkeep
Seasonal care including winter cutbacks and ongoing tree and shrub maintenance
Additional targeted landscaping as the garden grows and evolves with the family.
The Results: A Garden That Grows
The two seating areas have become the family's favourite spots - the breakfast area for quiet morning coffee and the larger deck for entertaining friends and family. The deep beds provide the year-round colour and interest the clients wanted, while the practical elements serve their daily needs.
Most importantly, this garden has proven that new build spaces don't have to lack character. With thoughtful design and quality planting, even the blankest canvas can become a beautiful, functional family space that improves with age.
Fern Landscape Garden Co. took a totally blank canvas and turned it into a garden that works for real family life, with flexibility to adapt and grow. We don't just plant gardens - we create spaces where families can make memories for years to come.
